Pasi Sahlberg is a professor not just by profession but also by heart. Why? Because of how earnest he is in making a difference with his life’s work.
For a decade, Pasi Sahlberg has served as a schoolteacher, teacher-educator, researcher, and policymaker in Finland’s educational administration. He has since ventured out into the world, revolutionising the school system by challenging the “it’s always been this way” mentality.
Pasi Sahlberg was clearly meant to be what he is today for he was born into a family of teachers. His grandmother holds a special place in his heart, for she gave him the freedom to think on his own—something that he’s also a big advocate of. As she once said, “If everybody thinks the same way, nobody probably thinks very much.”
For his lifelong commitment and service to education, Pasi Sahlberg has received awards like the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Resident Fellowship. He also released books, and one of them came out in 2021 titled Finnish Lessons 3.0: What Can the World Learn from Educational Change in Finland.
In this interview, Pasi Sahlberg offers a glimpse of what goes on behind the curtains of contemporary schooling and what we can all take from Finland’s education system, deemed as one of the finest in the world.
