How to Get Your First Work Experience as A Student
Be strategic and manage your expectations. Don’t be afraid of rejection and get feedback. Be visible. These are just a few tips on how to get your first work experience as a student. In today’s TIPS, Natasha Munasinghe shares some ways you can successfully get a job as an international student in Australia.
The first thing to do is to be strategic. Build your experience by working for non-profit organizations. Support events at the local council. These temporary positions will give your 3 to 6 months of solid experience. The hiring process is very competitive and gaining a lot of experience will make you stand out.
The next way to get your first work experience as a student is to manage expectations. To get to the big leagues in Australia, you will need 6 to 12 months of Australian work experience. By working on smaller firms in the beginning, you will gain knowledge and skills. You can also add these experiences on your resume. Don’t expect to get into the glamorous firms on your first few jobs.
We also encourage you to not be afraid of rejection. Apply for all types of jobs that you are interested in. Send in your resume so people will know you, see your name, and remember you. It also pays to be flexible and adaptable when choosing your first job.
When you have been applying for a long time and things aren’t working out, get feedback. Know what didn’t work so that you can do better on your next application. Ask directly and take notes.
Finally, another great way to get your first work experiences as a student is to be visible. Utilize LinkedIn as a networking tool. Follow the people who work for your dream companies. Interact with their posts. There is so much value in being active on their feed even before getting hired.
These are just a few ways to get your first work experience as a student. Students in Australia are allowed to work part-time and full-time, so enjoy this special privilege! Good luck!
