Things to Take into Account before Applying for a PhD
Knowing where you’re studying, finding the funds, having a good supervisor and preparing your topic are some of the things you need to take into account before applying for a PhD. In this episode of TIPS, Professor Ricardo Sosa shares his advice to students wanting to get their doctorate degrees.
Where you’re going to study is a huge factor to take into account before applying for a PhD. Students moving to Australia (or anywhere else) for their PhD need to choose the city and university that is the right fight for them. Speaking of the right fit, your supervisor also needs to be someone who gets you. Even more important than choosing a school, your supervisor will be your mentor throughout your doctorate years. Before applying for a PhD, look at your options and contact potential supervisors. It is always ideal to stick to one supervisor throughout your PhD. Do your best to choose a good one off the bat!
How to finance your PhD is a practical and important thing to take into account before applying for a PhD. After all, stressing about finances along with heavy research and sleepless nights is a recipe for disaster. So, find scholarships as soon as you decide on going for a PhD. You can also book some part-time work if you have the time and energy to do so. Be resourceful but don’t be too hard on yourself, as well.
Finally, what truly makes your doctorate degree special is having a specific topic that speaks to your mind and heart. If nothing sparks that fire of passion yet, spend more time in professional practice. That will be the arena on which you will find which issues to tackle and conquer for your PhD.
Getting a doctorate degree is a life-changing decision. There are plenty of things to take into account before applying for a PhD. We hope our TIPS were enlightening and educational. Best of luck!
